As the news on the COVID-19 coronavirus is changing daily, it is important for educators and parents to remember that young children look to adults for cues on how to respond.
A child psychologist at the Children’s Learning Institute explains what parents can do to maintain a sense of normalcy for their children during this time:
Responding to children about COVID-19. Simple advice and lessons for classroom teachers that focus on preventative, hygiene steps (login to CLI Engage to view these activities in the CIRCLE Activity Collection):
The CIRCLE Family Activity Collection provides you with a full set of lessons for children at home that you can align with your current instructional goals. It is designed to offer you multiple ways to share activities that children can do at home with their families to continue their learning and developmental progress. Connect with families and offer supportive, appropriate, engaging, and fun activities.
Consider these opportunities to plan engaging lessons that families can complete at home:
When sharing activities, we recommend attaching a brief explanation for parents, and use this letter to introduce the purpose of the activities: Activity Collection Introduction Letter (English and Spanish)
Use our simple family lesson form to send individualized activities to families. Download the fillable family lesson plan in English or Spanish, and view our example lesson plan. Use the notes column to provide more detailed explanations on the purpose of the activity, how to engage in it, and why it might be helpful for the child.
Looking to share a few links with families? Sharing activities is easy! Simply choose an activity, copy the URL and send via your preferred communication with the family. Logging into CLI Engage will allow you to save activities as “favorites” with My Activities.
If you have opportunities to speak with families, our family engagement resources also feature a goal-setting form that can be used for a 2-way conference using assessment results. It is recommended to be used in direct communication such as parent-teacher conferences, with parents and teachers as partners in prioritizing learning areas for children’s targeted support. Use this tool to record an action plan for supporting the student at both home and school: Family-Teacher Goal-Setting Form
If your school is using web conferencing tools (like Zoom or Webex) to talk to your students online, the CIRCLE Activity Collection for PreK to Grade 2 is a great tool for selecting small group and whole group activities. The collection offers activities that you can use for live-streaming lessons to your class, or recording yourself doing some of the activities to share with families.
Consider these opportunities to plan engaging lessons that you can do online with your students:
Due to anticipated disruptions at the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year as a result of COVID-19, CLI is currently working to develop and test alternative administration functionality and protocols. Please refer to our detailed information here. We’ll be making regular updates during the summer.
Prior to the remote administration of any CLI assessments, we encourage you to make the following considerations:
The following training webinars will be available:
After sharing recommended activities, consider these ideas for collecting feedback and communication with families on children’s progress. Photos, texts, emails, shareable apps, and web conferencing tools may be means to communicate and follow up.
Have families take a photo or send a simple text or email on their child’s participation in the activity and share with you. You can save documents, photos, and other feedback from families in the child’s student profile on CLI Engage.
These family observation forms were designed to help teachers collect valuable information from families about how they see their children learning and growing throughout the school year. Share these with your families and collect them when everyone is back at school. This is great information as we look towards the EOY progress monitoring window.
If you’re sharing details about a specific child’s progress monitoring results with families, be sure to use secure options that are FERPA-compliant, like encrypted email, text messages, or your organization’s approved teacher-parent education sharing platforms.
Recognizing that many families have infants and toddlers at home, consider sharing these resources.
Developmental milestones can help families become aware of what skills are expected at what ages and acknowledge what the child is accomplishing–a first smile, a first step, a first word. To track children’s development from birth to 48 months of age, you can find Developmental Milestone Checklists in English and Spanish here:
Families can seek and select activities from the CIRCLE Family Activity Collection for their infants and toddlers by domain areas and sort by age.
